Use & Care:

While the skillet comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. After cooking, we recommend cleaning with a stiff nylon brush and hot water. Using soap or the dishwasher is not recommended, and harsh detergents should never be used. Towel dry immediately cleaning and apply a light coating of oil to utensil while it is still warm.

Lodge LMP3 Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron Melting Pot

Pre-seasoned skillet is ready-to-use right out of the box

The black patina given to the cookware by the factory seasoning process is, in fact, vegetable oil that has been baked into a piece of cookware that has emerged from an individual sand mold. This coating of oil is a functional application and not a cosmetic application. The cookware is hanging as it rides through the electrostatic sprayer and commercial conveyer ovens at very high temperatures. This allows the oil to penetrate deeply into the pores of the iron which creates an easy release finish. As a result of this process, you may see a blister or bubble of oil at the southern-most point or at the end of the handle of the cookware piece. If visible, it will rub or flake off with your finger, leaving a brown spot. Don’t worry, it’s not rust but a seasoned spot that is brown, indicative of the varnish stage of seasoning. As a matter of fact, this is the color of home seasoned iron until it has been used several times. The brown spot will turn black with use.

Old tech is a cooking game-changer for me.
I don't use this melting pot very much, but when I do is really is a game changer. I recently got a great deal on some imitation "crab" meat and used this melting pot to make melted butter and garlic sauce to use as a dip. I've also used it to melt ghee so I could put it on steaks and roasts before searing or braising them. And don't get me started on pancakes!There's something about melted butter (or melted ghee) that's really awesome to cook with, and there's something about trying to melt butter in a microwave that just doesn't work, at least not for me.And about the "seasoning" that all iron cookware has to go through, in this case it comes pre-seasoned, and all I've done is melt butter in it, so it's seasoning itself just fine. I did no special procedure to season it before I started using it (like I have with iron pans) but it's doing just fine.

I actually purchased this for mixing henna for my hair rather than for barbecuing. The henna product I use instructed setting the henna in an iron pot, but I thought I could bypass this. After using henna for a couple of months, the thought occurred to me that maybe something in the interaction with the iron metal helps with the curing. Any henna user will tell you that it's an endurance test and everyone has to find their own mixer combination and timing for the results they want. I'm still experimenting, so I bought this pot per the henna instruction with the hope that it will help me get the results I wanted. I did everything in mixing the henna I had usually been doing, then applied it from my roots down about 1". Since I only have to do my roots now, the size of this pot works out. This first time that I have used the pot, the henna color result on my hair is actually a little darker, more red than before without the pot and closer to what I want. I also had kept the henna on my hair for half the time I did before because it was just too hot that day. So, there might be something, then, to the whole iron pot use. Whatever the cause for the darkening, I am continuing with this iron pot and experimenting with combinations. This size is agreeable also because it fits nicely on my small bathroom vanity as I apply the henna and it does not take up much space on my tiny kitchen counter as it cures. The long handle makes it easier to move around, because, well, small bathroom vanity and tiny kitchen counter. I would recommend this pot for anyone who does henna on their roots.
