- ultra fine sand paper to smoothen the wood handle.
- emory cloth to smoothen steel edges.
- soak handle in usp-grade mineral oil jar for weeks for an heirloom.
Mini turner works great for the 8" pan as well as the 14" griddle. Hash brown may be tough to pick up as a single piece. No complaints. A second mini spatula (to counter) would ease flipping the 14" fish without oil splatter.

Dexter-Russell 4-by-2.5-Inch Stainless Steel and Walnut Pancake Turner is a light weight and very thin spatula that works exceptionally well in cast iron pans. It is a very thin spatula, but has a solid and durable blade with little flex unless you press very hard. It easily turns eggs, and stirs vegetables. It is durable enough that I also use it to turn burgers and steaks. I have used the Dexter Russell very frequently for more than three years on my cast iron pans and it has held up well. The turner is thin enough to be used for some cutting tasks while cooking such as chopping meat. As a bonus it does and exceptional job at removing residue from cast iron pans, improving the surface of the pan, and keeping the pan surface smooth. You can scrape with light or medium pressure without harming the surface of a seasoned cast iron pan. I frequently use medium high heat when cooking burgers, steaks, and chops, so the surface of my pans take a beating. However, they are reasonably non stick thanks to the Russell Dexter spatula.
Oxo Steel Lasagna Turner.
It sells for approximately $10 at Bed Bath and Beyond, and is 20% less with coupon. This turner is heavier than the Russell Dexter. It is a thin spatula, but it is thicker than the Dexter Russell, and has almost no flex. It works well at turning eggs as well as flipping burgers and steaks, and stirring vegetables in cast iron pans. The functionality of this tool is similar to the Dexter Russell. It also is useful for scraping the surface of cast iron pans. It may not be quite as effective of removing the tiniest bits stuck on the surface of the pan as the Dexter Russel, but it does a very good job of maintaining the surface of cast iron pans. While a cursory inspection of the spatulas indicates that the Oxo appears to be sturdier and significantly heavier, I believe that the durability of the spatulas is actually near equal. Neither has a full tang handle, so over a long period of time, the handle could separate as a few people have stated in reviews. However, my Dexter Russell turner has help up very well for frequent use for more than three years. Be sure to thoroughly dry the walnut handle of the Dexter Russel turner after washing to prevent warping and separation from the metal. It is also a good idea to occasionally apply a light coat of mineral oil to the walnut handle to prevent the wood from drying out too much. Also thoroughly dry either spatula after washing to prevent rusting. If you get some rust on your spatula, there is no need to panic, you can usually remove the rust with Bar Keepers Friend.
When stirring vegetables, I like to use two spatulas to simplify turning the vegetables, so I sometimes use my Dexter Russell and Oxo turner at the same time. I slightly prefer the Dexter Russel for use in pans, but I probably would prefer the heavier Oxo on an outdoor grill. In my opinion, both are excellent tools for use with cast iron pans, and I recommend that people who purchase a cast iron pan immediately purchase one of these spatulas. Cleanup and maintenance of cast iron pans is fairly easy with proper use of a good metal spatula when cooking.
This turner has more or less the perfect size and form! It is GREAT for use in cast iron pans! The metal the turner is made of actually seems to be surprisingly high quality metal, and the wood has a very nice color and feel. Overall it is very well constructed.
The reason I have given this product only four stars instead of five, is that there was a label affixed to the blade of the turner that was very difficult to fully remove. Scrubbing, soap, alcohol, and other "friendly" methods all failed to remove the glue. In the end I had to use some WD-40 to remove the glue; which is generally not something you want to apply to a tool you use in food preparation... thankfully soap handles WD-40 just fine. Still, it's irksome. Now, having that glue on the metal is MUCH better than having it on the wood - but that glue itself is the problem! Dexter-Russel needs to use a different glue for that.
Some commenters have mentioned that the wood feels cheap. They are mistaken. The wood is not cheap, it's perfectly fine and actually looks quite nice. The problem they are having is that the wood is untreated. Like a decent cutting board, or any other raw wood product you'd use in the kitchen, you need to treat the wood. To do this, just get a hold of some food or pharmaceutical grade mineral oil, and apply a coat to the wood. Allow this to sink into the wood for an hour or two, wipe off the excess, and repeat until the wood is nice and seasoned. I apply a coat of the oil after every cleaning (and will continue to do so until it's fully seasoned). Eventually, you'll only need to oil it every few months. NEVER put a wooden handled tool in the dishwasher.
