ShamBo French Press Coffee Maker

Our Score 6 out of 10
French Press Coffee Maker, (8 Cups/ 34 oz) Durable Easy Clean Coffee Pot Heat Resistant Borosilicate Glass - 100% BPA Free

The ShamBo French Press Coffee Maker can be used for coffee, milk foam, and even tea. Its design is a glass container made with borosilicate, plus other metal and plastic parts to create the entire press. The grade of the materials is FDA approved and the contraption is completely dishwasher safe. The stainless line frame that holds the container and forms the handle creates an pleasant aesthetic.

This product performs well but may be less durable than most stainless steel alternatives. The glass, however, provides a nice aesthetic and holds heat well. It may not be as friendly to the touch as some of the thicker designs. For its price, however, this press certainly is an impressive and sleek product. Those who want a French press for use at home as well as while camping may especially like this model.

Pros
  • Dishwasher safe
  • One-year warranty
  • Budget-friendly
  • Holds heat well and prevents sludge
  • Requires coarse coffee grind

The ceramic body in the press comes in both black and white. It is accented with wooden touches. The handle contains a miniature hourglass times brewing for 4 minutes.

This product is slightly more expensive than others, but it is more affordable than many of the durable versions designed predominantly for camping. Although this press works for travel and for the outdoors, I might opt to use one of these versions at home instead. Plus, when not being used for camping, this press has the perfect aesthetic for a kitchen.

  • Stays hot longer
  • Built-in timer
  • Ideal size for most people
  • Ground can catch on the side of the filter

Important Travel French Press Features to Consider

When choosing a travel French press, you might want to consider how large the press is (meaning how much coffee you can make at once!). Possibly you want to avoid BHAs in the materials, prefer double-walled energy-conserving models, or aim to find a product that prevents grounds from muddying your coffee.

If you plan to wash your press at home, then possibly a dishwasher safe quality is important. For those travelers going on the road, you may be especially keen on knowing the dimensions of the vessel and whether or not it is designed for your particular vehicle’s cup holder.

If you are particular about how your coffee tastes and detest bitter flavors, investing in a press with a timer function – digital or analog – might be a preferred option. Should you frequent particularly cold areas or tend to sip coffee over many long hours, the typical double-walled features of presses may pale in comparison to the three-walled choices some models offer. These models keep the coffee hot for far longer, even against incredibly tough conditions. If you don’t want to worry about that, using an insulated travel mug can also be a good idea for keeping your coffee hot.

Of course, you might also be concerned about the style or visual appeal of your press, and many companies do offer a variety of designs to appease a plethora of customers. There is no right or wrong answer to what your preferences are: you simply need to understand what it is you prefer.

Benefits of Using Travel French Presses

Perhaps selecting the benefits of travel French presses can be a little subjective, but I’ve definitely found my reasons. As someone who enjoys strong coffee with few impurities, there is something about pressing coffee down in a French press – without the use of a paper filter or other barrier – that not only leaves the coffee tasting more authentic but it also prevents me from using extra waste.

If you own a travel coffee grinder and can grind your own coffee fresh, then all the better to get those fantastic flavors. Plus, if you’re on the road, why wouldn’t you want stimulating, delicious coffee in all its caffeinated glory? That being said, you can absolutely opt for the decaffeinated varieties while using a French press as well – the same as if you were using a regular drip machine.

Other reasons I love using a travel French press is it gives me a high amount of freedom. If I’m camping or on the road, I have the ability to brew my coffee with nothing more than hot water, press out the grounds, and drink as I please! I can keep the coffee from being too bitter by paying attention to how long I let it go before I press it. If home alone, it’s the perfect serving size, too! Using the press makes me experience so many more dimensions of the flavor. Don’t forget to get a great coffee thermos to keep your coffee warm while you’re camping.

Precautions for Using Travel French Presses

A lot of the downsides to using a travel French press are likely also subjective but also they heavily depend on which product in particular you use and its features. First of all, if you don’t like strong coffee and don’t have a press with an easy way to time how long you have brewed your coffee, you may not prefer using a press. Instead, you may just want to use a Stansport coffee make, camping coffee maker, pour-over coffee maker, or battery operated coffee maker.

Another downside is if you want to brew coffee for more than a couple of people, you might require more than one press. In ordinary drip machines, the ability to change the water amount in each brewing session is a little more flexible.

Furthermore, some presses may seem more difficult to clean than a simple drip machine with a disposable paper filter above the receiving pot. In addition to these small details, not every press and its plunger is the same. You might find the press that fits so many ideals but does not fit in your cup holder… so you couldn’t use it on the road. Or perhaps the mesh is not fine enough and you experience grit in your coffee. A lot of it is your personal preference!

Conclusion

Of all the different French presses we reviewed, the best travel French press is the SterlingPro French Press Double-Wall Stainless Steel Coffee/Tea Maker. It’s good for travel, easily washed, and resilient. Its more affordable than the premium pick, the Espro Coffee and, while more pricey than our budget pick, the Borosilicate press, the extra investment means better durability for outdoor use. The runner up is the StamperPress with its useful timer and durability, although it’s not as ideal for travel as our top pick. Finally, the honorable mention goes to the press with the Thermometer which has a sweet reader but takes longer to brew than our top pick, the French Double Wall – our choice as best travel French press!
